og:description | Friends for a NonViolent World is a Quaker-inspired organization of people who affirm the dignity inherent in each human being. We share a commitment to advancing nonviolence as an ethic for honoring human dignity and a strategy for achieving peace and justice.Donate to FNVW//////////////////////////////////////We at FNVW know this will be a particularly troubling Thanksgiving Day. We hold in our hearts and in the light the water protectors, the people of Aleppo, refugees and immigrants, those in prisons and all who are suffering from fear, oppression and injustice. We also know we have much to be thankful for: including life and our FNVW community. Si se puede – together.//////////////////////////////////////We Stand with the Peaceful Water Protectors at Standing Rock The Standing Rock Medic & Healer Council at the Standing Rock Dakota Access Pipeline Resistance Camps released the following statement: On November 21st as a direct result of the violent police response at Standing Rock towards unarmed people opposing the Dakota Access Pipeline, a 21 year old woman from New York City, Sophia Wilansky, was severely injured when a concussion grenade thrown by police hit her left arm and exploded. Sophia was heading to bring water to the unarmed people who were being attacked for several hours by Morton County Sheriff forces. The Morton County Sheriff’s Department has stated that she was injured by a purported propane explosion that the Sheriff’s Department claimed the unarmed people created. These statements are refuted by Sophia’s testimony, by several eye-witnesses who watched police intentionally throw concussion grenades at unarmed people, by the lack of charring of flesh at the wound site and by the grenade pieces that have been removed from her arm in surgery and will be saved for legal proceedings. Sophia was safely taken out of North Dakota for emergency surgery and is currently in stable condition. Amnesty International, in reaction to the use of water cannons and the excessive use of force against water protectors, wrote to Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier that: “The U.S. government is obligated under international law to respect, protect, and fulfill the human rights of Indigenous people, including the rights to freedom of expression and assembly. It is the legitimate right of people to peacefully express their opinion. Public assemblies should not be considered as the “enemy”. The command hierarchy must convey a clear message to law enforcement officials that their task is to facilitate and not to restrict a peaceful public assembly.” To read more, go to: "Press Release Prepared by Standing Rock Medic & Healer Council at the Standing Rock Dakota Access Pipeline Resistance Camps" "Dakota Access pipeline protester 'may lose her arm' after police standoff", The Guardian "Letter to Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier, Morton County Sheriff’s Department", Amnesty International --------------------------- Take Action: Support Sen. Al Franken's request to the Department of Justice to take action to protect the safety and First Amendment rights of Dakota Access Pipeline protestors. "The reported use of water cannons for crowd control in sub-freezing temperatures is excessive and unnecessary, and I urge you to take action to protect the First Amendment rights of protestors, and the physical safety of all involved parties," wrote Sen. Franken in his letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch. "Native American populations have struggled for decades under the complex burden of historical trauma, and I have witnessed and admired how these communities have turned to their cultural foundations to build strength against that burden. These tactics against protestors exercising their Constitutional rights threaten to add another layer of trauma to these communities. I urge you to do everything in your power to prevent further escalation of violence." Call Attorney General Loretta Lynch and leave a message that you support Senator Franken’s call to support the safety, civil and human rights of the Standing Rock protectors. Department Comment Line: 202-353-1555 --------------------------- FNVW thanks Deborah McLaren and Rob Ramer for organizing a local fundraiser to support Native American Peoples and their allies in the fight to halt the Dakota Access Pipeline and to revive a way of life and protect water resources for everyone. Standing Rock Fundraiser//////////////////////////////////////Remember the Children 23,863 Children Killed in Syria since March 2011 On the United Nations Universal Children’s Day, Syrian Network for Human Rights has released its yearly special report that documents the violations against children by the influential parties in Syria. The report was entitled: “The Bleeding Innocence”. According to the report, The children of Syria have been the victim of all sorts of violations. Since March 2011 their schools are being systematically targeted by the Syrian regime and its allies who seem to be deliberately targeting the future generations of Syria in retaliation of the areas that called for changing the ruling regime and sought to repel against its control. The Syrian regime and its allies (foreign militias and Russian forces) absolutely top all other parties with an estimated 94% of all violations perpetrated while other parties, such as self-management forces (primarily the Democratic Union Party, a branch for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party), extremist Islamic groups (ISIS and Fateh Al Sham Front), and International coalition forces are responsible for the remaining 6% to varying degrees. Hail our people! Hail victory!” from a lectern. His audience of more than 200 people, mostly men, responded with cheers and a smattering of Nazi salutes. //////////////////////////////////////FNVW Holiday Fair Coming Soon Dec 2-3 at Minneapolis Friends meeting house, 44th & York, Minneapolis Friends for a NonViolent World (FNVW) is hosting its annual Holiday Fair, Fri, Dec 2, 1-9 and Sat, Dec 3, 10-4.
